Complaint on FOSEE briefing (Alpha to Beta)

Attention to all,

SRC Melaka received a complaint from FOSEE students that they are having a briefing on 26/12/08 about the transfer from Alpha to Beta.

The students are complaint about it because as we know there are 2 public holidays on 25/12/08 and 29/12/08. For those students who are celebrating Christmas may need to go back their hometown celebrate with their family.

The students are enquiry whether the briefing can postpone or try not to make the briefing or any other important briefing on those dates as it may touches the sensitive religion/race issue in MMU community.

However, SRC got an immediate feedback from FOSEE.

According to FOSEE:

There are alternatives for this briefing session.

One of them is Counseling Day.

FOSEE will be having a Counseling Day in every trimester 3.

This Counseling Day will be fixed to answer all enquiries and the students will be able to walk in to ask any questions.

For the coming trimester, the counseling day will fall on Monday of 3rd Week.

So, for those FOSEE students who may not able to attend the briefing about transfer from Alpha to Beta on 26/12/2008 still can attend the Counseling Day in next trimester.

And lastly, FOSEE sincerely wish all the students have a nice Christmas and a happy holiday.

Changes on trimester system in June 2010!!

Dear all,

Many of the students are being told that MMU is going to change the trimester system from long, short, long semester to short, long, long semester.

However, SRC had a clear clarification from MMU VP Academic, Dr. Wong

According to Dr. Wong,

For June 2009 intake (session 09/10), FOSEE will be 3 long trimesters due to MQA's instruction.
Degree programmes will still be Long (14 weeks), Short (8 weeks) and Long (14 weeks) based on the programme structures given to this intake (ie same as current structure).

However, there is a plan going on now to change trimester system for degree programmes to Long (June), Long (Nov), Short (March) in June 2010. If this is approved by MQA, Session 2010/2011 intake will be following new programme structures (being plan at the moment).

For students coming in before and on June 2009, the programme structures need to be changed to long, long, short semesters from the current long, short, long semesters starting June 2010 if the new structures are implemented.

If this is done, it means we will be re-organizing the subjects to ensure that pre-requisite subjects will not be affected. We expect last batch of students will graduate by June 2013 (for 4 year programmes).

Beyond which, MMU will only have new structure students (ie first intake in Jun 2010).
We have until June 2010 to re-organize these structures and if this proposal is approved, we will announce to students latest by end of this year.

Thank you.

Students' Representative Council.

ERU Exam Schedule Policy..

Dear students,

Since exam schedule is released, students are advised to check their exam schedule whether it is clashing or beyond the exam schedule policy.

SRC advice students to make immediate feedback to ERU if their exam schedules are being found clashing or beyond the exam schedule policy or too pack.

Besides, SRC also encouraging the student to report this matter to SRC so that SRC can follow up with ERU whether ERU can help the students to reduce the stressful exam schedule.

For your information,

ERU EXAM Schedule Policy is as below:

3 things must be avoided

-     Intensity (not more than 3 subjects in 2 days, 4subjects in 3 days, and 5 subjects in 4 days)

-          Cannot have 2 exams which duration is 3 hours each in one day (Accounting, Law)

-          Clashing

When and how to set the exam schedule policy

-          Draft exam schedule ( long semester: Week 6/7, short semester: Week 4)

-          Release exam schedule 3 weeks before the final exam

-          Open for comment the feedback in 1 week time

-          It is not finalize yet, ERU will find to find the best slot for the students to avoid compact exam schedule.

Priority

-    Request from the lecturer (Maternity leave, End of contract)

-          Law  Subjects

Besides, here are some information after we had a meeting with ERU and some action taken by ERU as well as suggestion from SRC.

Action taken by ERU :-

ERU will try to give higher priority to those students who are following their course structure, core subjects compare to University subjects which are the minor ones (Moral, Malaysian Studies, English, Technical Communication, Co-curriculum and etc) .

If it happens to open a slot for night time, ERU will ask approval from the top management (VP academic).

Suggestion from SRC :-

It is highly advisable for the students to check out their exam schedule once ERU release the exam schedule so that students can avoid the compact exam schedule and immediately give their feedback comment to ERU. Hence, ERU will take immediate action to help the students as well.

Problems Faced by MMU Students !!!!!!

Dear students,

Students' Representative Council 08/09 have noticed some problem which are faced by  MMU students and the Student Welfare Division of SRC had surveyed as well as try to find the solution to solve these problems.

The problems are as such :-
1) 8000 MMU students are taking supplementary examinations.

As we know the number has been increasing compared to previous semester so SRC came up with a plan to dig out why is there so many students are failing and also try to find the
right solution to decrease this problem. SRC requested to find the root of the problem from each faculty and present possible solutions to cut down the number of supplementary or failures. FIST had solved their problem with making the tutorial classes into smaller number. SAC requested to SRC to do   a survey to help in finding the root of the problem and moreover definitely this problem will be brought up to Main Committee meeting.

2) Student who are  taking subjects exceeding maximum credit hour.

The solution taken into effect by SRC was by calling the Exam Unit. It was said that students must appeal to the faculty dean. Students must also get official letters from the dean
because the letter will be a form of dean's approval to the student to take the extra subject.

As to above problems, if you have any problems pertaining our campus or studies matter, do drop by at SRC room( Sri Perdana) above main hall or you may mail us at srcmalacca@gmail.com. Your cooperation is kindly appreciated.

Thank You.

FOSEE Students' Problem and Solutions Taken Into Effect !!!

Dear students,

Whereby the complaint from FOSEE students about the problem that they are facing which SRC had looked thru mainly about :-

- Their classes which are boring. Students complaint that lecturers are boring and don’t understand what are they teaching. They are willing to have petition done to change the lecturer as they got to know the same lecturer will teach them next semester but different subject. Language lecturer is suppose to be cheerful and energetic as they say language is a boring subject. -So it has been raised to the FOSEE lectures to take further action. It was found that lecturers have been told to increase students’ participation during lectures.

- Availability during consultation hour. Lecturers are not in their room during consultation hour. So if it is such students must take down the lecturers’ name and office number and immediately report the lecturer to the faculty’s administration office. Students may email the
VP: siong@mmu.edu.my for immediate action.

- Syllabus. The syllabus and the books should be updated as there are errors in the book. Work book has the most errors. The solution that our SRC has taken into effect were the errors of the book will be notified to the publisher.

The issues which are mainly concerned about the FOSEE facilities were :-

- Lift in new FOSEE building (ACR). This is because lift in ACR always out of service. Students and even the lecturers are complaining.

- Computers with speakers. Computers are best to have speakers. Computers in ACR4004 suppose to have a build in speaker, but has been taken out or what, is uncertain. Projects such as website and etc can be viewed in their personal computers instead of using the lecturer’s computer. This matter is being discussed and need further follow up.

Updates on current issues

Dear all,

The issues which are mainly concerned were about the :

1. Student Smart Card (ID)

Students of January 07/08 intake and the June 08/09 intake are still using their temporary ID card as they are yet to receive their Smart Card (Student ID). Clarifying this matter with the assistant director, Mr. Shukri Bin Saib, he said that the an order of 5000 pieces of empty smartcard has been placed last year to Multimedia Product Innovation Unit (MPU), previously known as CMEAD and they were supposed to receive it by August this year as said by the Senior Director of MPU, Mr. David. Due to unknown reasons (Mr. Shukri will clarify the actual reason) there has been a delay. As a time-being replacement, Temporary Smart Cards (1M chip memory) which is similar to the actual Student Smart Card (4M chip memory) will be distributed. Mr. Shukri added that the temporary Smart Cards should be ready by this week or by end of this month (the actual date will be announced later).

2. Security Personnel

Students have lodged complaints on the securities that are being rude while on duty. International students face communication problems with the securities which eventually lead to an argument. When asked about their attitude problem, Mr. Shukri said the this matter has been discussed with the Director of Security, Mejar (R) Victor Joe Joseph and the campus director, Prof. Omar. They have conducted briefings with the security personnel regarding their attitude. Hopefully, these incidents will not repeat in future.

3. Students Attacked

Following up the incident of the international student attacked in Taman Bukit Beruang, a meeting was held between OCPD and the security division of MMU requesting for more police patrols in Bukit Beruang housing area. Moreover, securities of MMU are doing patrols in areas which are close to MMU (e.g.: Taman Dahlia) using the Emergency Response Unit van.

FIST Computer labs

Dear all,

After paying a sum for IT fees we the SRC have requested that all computers in all labs be equipped with programs such as JAVA, Flash players and Adobe Reader. Besides that, we also requested that all computers be connected to the internet and if there are any computers which aren’t, we requested that each Faculty Administration alert their technicians to fix the problem immediately. All computer labs are available for use of students throughout working hours (Lunch time: 1pm – 1.30pm). During Ramadan the labs are closed at 4.30pm.

Covered Pathway from Library to Block B

Good day to all,

The Operations Director as well as the Library Director has both agreed with SRC that the covered pathway be constructed. The Operations Director has put in the word to Prof Omar (Campus Director) to request budget on the construction for the year 2008/2009. However it is yet to be known if the Campus director will agree to it as well as the time that the construction will begin. (Work still in progress by Student Welfare Division)

Lab facilities in FET

Dear students,

Whereby the complaint from final year students about the lab facilities in FET which SRC had looked thru mainly about lack of equipment in FET labs, most machineries are not working and due to this matter, students are forced to go to other to universities to use their machineries. So it has been raised to Dr.Peter(Dean of FET) to take further action. It was found that this machinery is segregated into simple damage and major damage. It would take a whole 2 months to repair equipments which has faced a major damage where as it would take 2 weeks maximum to fix minor damages. Parts for major damage are shipped in from Japan. We will be getting a list of these non-working equipment and submit it to the FET administration.

Supplementary Examination

A very good day to all,

There is no such decision to impose a sum of 30% onto students who wish to take the supplementary examination. MMU plans to discourage students from taking the supplementary examination as well as decrease the number of students who take advantage of the supplementary examination and they have yet to find a solution that is effective. Among the suggestions to halt students from taking advantage is by imposing a fee on the supplementary exam or making the supplementary examination harder. At this time no decision has been made and it is still in the process of discussion. However, Dr. Wong (vice president for academic Multimedia University) feels that it is unfair to impose a fee on supplementary examinations. The toughness of the supplementary examination is decided by the lecturers as it isn’t a policy and it depends on the lecturer himself/herself. The main idea of this issue is to discourage and minimize the number of students from taking advantage or choosing supplementary examinations as an alternative.

Relply Comments

Assalamualaikum and hi everyone, my apology coz I just know all of these comments since my new house currently don't have internet connection yet. However,i will answer all the misunderstanding and fuss here.

Firstly about the “annons” statement...Hemm, what we have here? An English teacher or maybe can call him walking dictionary. My fellow friend, I don’t know your judgment based on what but I don’t think my English is very weak. I have a certain standard of English even though not as “great” as you. I just want to advise you that plz don’t cross the border…my patience have the limit. About the petition to condemn me and want to see En. Zam regarding that matter… just give it a try bro. I’m looking forward too.

However, I open to my friend here to come see me personally this Monday, 8th Sept 2008...10pm till 12pm at the SRC room. I don’t think you only know to talk craps here but don’t dare to face me. I will welcome you then. Maybe we can settle our disputes there.

About the SRC blog...I can’t see the relationship between creating new blog with showing our power. Where are the connections???But I just want to make some correction here...We can’t log previous SRC’s blog coz of previous SRC, Nicholas to be precise is using his own personal email and password. However to encounter this problem (SRC keep changing blog) for the future, we are now developing SRC website that using “mmu.edu.my” domain. This website under development. So plz be patient.

Next, regarding requesting additional computers etc.Haish, you all has to confirm with STAD first before you raise up this matter. We never request it!!For your information, SRC only have 1 computer and the others in the SRC’s room are belongs to respective SRC’s laptops and computers.

Regarding appointed candidate problems…plz refer to (GENERAL ELECTION) PROCEDURE 1997 in section qualification of candidates of SRC and also you have to refer to the announcement of qualification of appointed SRC which you can find in previous bulletin board. Sassi fulfill all the criteria and there is no problems arise regarding not respect the STAD. For your information he not involve in Industrial training throughout 3 sems here and he will be available all the sems.

About the student’s welfare (lift problems, library fees etc), we already aware that problems and already rise up this matters to the En. Zam. On top of that, this coming Thursday, 11th Sept 2008, we will have a meeting with respective head of divisions in MMU mainly to solve all of these problems. We will do our best to serve you all.

Reminder: We, SRC do not paid of what we are doing, so you all must have some manners in dealing with us. Plz do not breach the freedom of giving comments here. This service mends to the students who really have problems and not to the people who always want to bombarding people. Plz do not bombard any of SRC members here and also you are not allowed to use harsh words. If there are any unsatisfied with the SRC members or even with me…You all can construct me personally, I’m welcoming you all. Be professional and don’t act like childish.

Lack of Parking Lots Inside the Campus

The amount of mmu students have been increasing year by year.It comes as no surprise that the current parking lots would NOT BE ENOUGH to the students. The insufficient parking lots at MMU, has forced the students to park their vehicles outside the campus which puts them in danger of being charged by MBMB for a fee amounting up to RM 100.

Below Average Lab Facilities in FET

FET's final year students have complained about the lab facilities in FET being below average. They can't complete/start their FYP with the unfunctioning equipment .So,they have to fork out extra payments to use equipment from others campus to complete/start their FYP.

As the result after our meeting,we,SRC has decided to request LAN to come and check the equipments condition and make a report based on this issue. With that report, we can prove that this is a first priority issue to MMU and urge MMU to fix it immediately.
